Our guest on this episode is the American filmmaker Nathanial Dorsky, a prolific and poetic filmmaker who has been making short experimental films since the mid 1960’s. His book Devotional Cinema is essential reading for anyone interested in the transformative nature of film. We discuss shooting the light on a plant, his approach to open form editing and why he only shows work at 18 fps. We also talk about his relationship with Stan Brakhage, who of course, we named this podcast after.

Additional Information:

Devotional Cinema is available from Small Press Distribution.
Nathaniel has a Bell & Howell Filmosound Specialist 399 projector.
At the moment he shoots on Kodak Vision 50D Color Negative Film.
He uses Colorlab in Rockville, MD.
You can read more about the filmmaker George Kuchar mentioned in the interview here.
And here for the Stan Brakhage film 'Anticipation of the Night', according to Dorsky “One of the great revolutionary movies.”
On polyvalent editing we recommended this essay by P. Adams Sitney on the Peter Blum Gallery website.

Dorsky’s films are available only as 16mm film prints and are distributed by Canyon Cinema in San Francisco and Light Cone in Paris.

Thank you to Graeme Hogg (aka Hogge) for the audio recording of his own 16mm projector running at 18 fps for this episode.
